How to use the distance calculator

Type your city in the first box and your partner's city in the second, then pick each from the list. The result updates straight away: the distance in miles and kilometers, how many hours apart your clocks are, how long a nonstop flight would take, and the halfway point between you.

Use the swap button to flip the cities, and tap "show in km" to change units. The page address changes as you go, so you can copy it and send your exact result to your partner.

FAQ

Common questions

How is the distance between us calculated?

It's the straight-line distance over the curve of the Earth, also called the great-circle or "as the crow flies" distance, between the centers of your two cities. Driving or flight routes are usually a bit longer.

How accurate is the flight time?

It's a rough guide for a nonstop flight: the distance at a typical cruising speed of about 830 km/h, plus around 40 minutes for take-off and landing. Real trips with layovers, airport time and headwinds take longer, so check an airline for exact times.

What is the halfway point used for?

Some long-distance couples meet in the middle so neither person makes the whole trip. The halfway point is the spot on the map exactly between you; we also show the nearest big city, which may be easier to fly into. If the midpoint is over an ocean, look at cities along the route instead.

How far apart is a long-distance relationship?

There's no official cutoff. Many people count it as long distance once you can't easily see each other in person every week, often a few hours' drive or more. What matters most is how you stay close in between visits.

My town isn't in the list. What should I do?

The list covers about 2,800 cities with 100,000 or more people. Pick the nearest one; for distances between countries, the result will be within a few percent.

Is this calculator free? Do I need an account?

Yes, it's free and there's nothing to sign up for. Everything runs in your browser, and the link in your address bar updates so you can send the result to your partner.
