Games for Long-Distance Couples: Live, Async and No-Download
The best games for long-distance couples: no-download call games with rules, online games to play live, async daily games for time zones, and quizzes.

The short answer
For calls and texts, play no-download games like Two Truths and a Lie, Song Association or Draw It Blind. For live play online, try browser party games on Kosmi or a co-op game like It Takes Two or Stardew Valley. Across time zones, use async daily games like a shared mini crossword where you compare times.
Games do something a regular call can't: they give you a reason to laugh at the same moment. When you're far apart, the easiest way to feel like a couple again is to be a little silly together, and a game gives you permission.
The right game depends on how much time you share. Some of these need nothing but your voices. Some need you both online at once. And some work on your own clocks, which matters a lot if you're in different time zones. Here's the full lineup, sorted that way.

No-download games for calls and texts
These need nothing but your voices, or your thumbs. Keep a few in your back pocket for calls that start to feel repetitive.
20 Questions, couples edition
One of you thinks of something, the other gets 20 yes-or-no questions to guess it. The couples twist: restrict it to your shared life. "A memory from our second visit." "Something in my fridge right now." "A person we both know." The guesser learns what the other person remembers, which is half the fun.
Two Truths and a Lie
Say three statements about yourself, one false. Your partner guesses the lie. It gets good once you've run out of obvious facts and start digging: childhood injuries, embarrassing jobs, the celebrity you once stood behind in line. Works over text, too.
Would You Rather, answered at the same time
The standard game, with one rule that makes it better: you both answer at once. Over text, count down and hit send together. On a call, both hold up one or two fingers. You find out where you disagree instead of one person copying the other.
Never Have I Ever
On video, each of you holds up five fingers. Take turns saying something you've never done. If your partner has done it, they put a finger down and owe you the story. Keep it light early in the relationship; it gets revealing fast.
Hot Takes
Take turns reading out an opinion ("Breakfast is overrated," "Airports are fun") and rating it from 1 (strongly disagree) to 10 (strongly agree), both at the same time. A gap bigger than five means you have to defend your number for sixty seconds.
Song Association
One person says a word, and the other has five seconds to sing a line of a song that contains it. "Rain." "Summer." "Baby" is too easy, so ban it. Loud, fast and impossible to play without laughing.
Draw It Blind
One of you finds an image your partner can't see (a famous painting, a meme, a random object) and describes it using only shapes and directions: "Draw a large oval. Now three small triangles on the top left." The other draws it, then you reveal both side by side. The results are reliably terrible.
One-Word Story
Build a story together, one word each, taking turns. "Once." "There." "Was." "A." "Suspicious." "Goose." It falls apart within a minute, which is the point. A good variation for couples: the story has to be about the two of you, ten years from now.
Categories speed round
Pick a category ("things in a hotel room," "Pixar movies," "reasons to be late") and alternate naming one item each. First person to repeat, freeze for more than five seconds, or say something the other person rejects loses the round. Best of five, and the loser picks the next category.
Emoji movie guess
Over text, describe a movie, song or shared memory in emoji only. The other person gets three guesses. It's a good game for when you're both busy and can only reply every so often.
What games can you play online together, live?
If you can both be online for an hour, browser party games and co-op video games give you the most "we did something together" feeling. Here are well-known options in a few categories.
Browser party games (no download)
Kosmi is a free, browser-based hangout with built-in video chat and games like mini golf, 8 ball pool, cornhole and retro console games, plus watch-together for streaming. Nothing to install, which makes it good for a spontaneous game night.
GeoGuessr drops you into a Street View panorama and you guess where on Earth you are. The Daily Challenge (five locations, refreshed daily) is free, which you can both play and compare scores; party games and duels are part of the paid subscription.
SharePlay games on FaceTime
If you both have iPhones, SharePlay in FaceTime lets you watch, listen and play together, including supported multiplayer games in Game Center, while you stay on the call.
Co-op video games
- It Takes Two. A co-op adventure built only for two players, online or couch co-op. The Friend's Pass lets your partner play online with you without buying the full game, as long as one of you owns it. It's about a couple, which makes for some funny self-recognition.
- Stardew Valley. A cozy farming game with online co-op: you share a farm, divide the chores, and slowly build something together. It works well as a standing weekly session, one in-game season at a time. Check that you're both on platforms that can play together.
- Minecraft. An open-ended building game where you can make a shared world and come back to it for months. Build a house for the two of you, then keep adding rooms.

Live games inside a couples app
In Miles Apart, Photo Roulette (free) is a live game you play together, and Double Agents (Pro) is a live co-op word game where you work as a team. Puzzles is a set of photo jigsaws (Paris, Kyoto, the Amalfi coast and more) you piece together as a pair; the first level is free and the rest are Pro.
Which games work across time zones?
Async games, where each of you plays on your own time and the results come together later, are the answer for couples who barely overlap. They give you a small shared thing every day without needing a call.
Turn-based classics
Words With Friends is a free, turn-based word game (with in-app purchases), so you can play a move when you wake up and your partner plays theirs on their lunch break. Many chess apps also support slow games with a day or more per move.
Daily puzzles you compare afterward
This is the kind of game Miles Apart was built around. Each game is the same puzzle for both of you, so you can play at breakfast and your partner can play at midnight, then compare.
- Mini Crossword (free): a daily 5x5 crossword where you compare solve times. Quick enough for a coffee break, competitive enough to trash-talk.
- Guess the Word, Word Match and Groups of 4 (free): daily word games for when you want a small shared win.
- Two Truths & a Lie (Pro): each day you write yours and try to spot your partner's. It's the call game above, turned into a daily ritual that doesn't need you both awake.
- Powder Dash and Moo Dash (free): you race your partner's ghost from their earlier run. It feels live even when they finished hours ago.
- Animal Stack (free): try to out-stack your partner's tower.
Miles Apart is free to download on iPhone and Android, with an optional Pro subscription that covers both partners. For a wider look at couples apps, see our roundup of the best long-distance relationship apps.
Quiz games to learn more about each other
Quiz games turn "getting to know you" into something with a scoreboard. They're great early in a relationship, and surprisingly revealing years in.
How Well Do You Know Me?
Each of you writes ten questions about yourself ("What's my comfort meal?", "Who was my first celebrity crush?", "What would I grab in a fire?"). Swap lists and answer about each other. Score one point per correct answer, and half a point if you're close enough that the other person laughs.
Don't want to write the questions? Our free How Well Do You Know Me? quiz does it for you: answer ten questions about yourself, send your partner the link, and they get a score out of ten. No sign-up.
Who's Most Likely?
Read out a prompt ("Who's most likely to cry at an ad?", "Who's most likely to get lost in an airport?"), count down from three, and both point at the camera (you) or at yourself. Matches are funny. Disagreements are funnier.
Quizzes in an app
If you'd rather not write the questions yourself, Miles Apart has quizzes you each answer and then compare: How Well Do You Know Me?, Who's Most Likely?, Would You Rather, Our Firsts, Deal Breakers and more. There are also reflection quizzes like a Love Language Test and Attachment Style on Pro. Or grab prompts from our free list of questions for long-distance couples.
How do you keep games fun, not stressful?
Keep the stakes silly and mix in games where you're on the same team. A game is a date, not a tournament.
- Pick forfeits, not scores. The loser plans the next date, sends a voice note singing a song of the winner's choice, or writes a short love letter.
- Handicap the expert. If one of you always wins the crossword, give them a 60-second penalty.
- Alternate co-op and competitive. A week of racing ghosts, then a week of building something together.
- Stop while it's fun. Three rounds is often better than ten, especially late at night on one side of the call.
- Let games be a side dish. They're a way to share a moment, not a replacement for the real conversations. If a game night keeps replacing the talk you need to have, have the talk.
Frequently asked questions
What games can long-distance couples play over text?

What is a good free online game for couples?
Kosmi is free and runs in a browser with games like mini golf and 8 ball pool plus built-in video chat. GeoGuessr's Daily Challenge is free too. Many daily word games in couples apps, including Miles Apart's Mini Crossword and Word Match, are free.
What games can you play on FaceTime with your boyfriend or girlfriend?
Never Have I Ever, Song Association, Draw It Blind, 20 Questions and Who's Most Likely all work on a plain FaceTime call. SharePlay also lets you play supported Game Center multiplayer games together during the call.
What co-op video games are best for couples?
It Takes Two is built only for two players and has a Friend's Pass so your partner can join online without buying the full game. Stardew Valley suits relaxed couples who like building a farm together over many sessions, and Minecraft works for couples who like open-ended building.
Are competitive games bad for relationships?
Not usually, as long as the stakes stay silly. Mix co-op games with competitive ones, pick fun forfeits instead of scorekeeping that lasts for weeks, and give the stronger player a handicap if one of you always wins.
